Output read image Error

I'm trying to use the Output tab to preview render frames as they are generated, and I get this error:

"Cannot read image data or format for [Q:\images\exampleFile.iff]"

The documentation says that the output tab feature does not work for all job types. I am using a Maya Job Type to render. Is the problem with the job type or the format?

The .iff maya image format can be viewed by setting up an external viewer like fcheck (in the QubeGUI Preferences menu) and then right-clicking on the frame(s) or job and selecting "View...".

This external image viewer hook provides the capability to view EXR or other image formats that are newer or specific to CG packages like the maya .iff format.
